I Gots Me A New MacBook!!

I have named her Opal. She is very pretty. I imagine she works like a dream... Why the imagining? Why not reality? Well.... I CAN'T GET IT TO PICK UP AN FRIGGIN' INTERNET SIGNAL!!! I don't blame Opal. I blame the Apple AirPort Express that I bought. It sucks. Or maybe I suck. I don't know. I can't get it to work. It appears an email to Nannyland's Computer Guru will be in order!

I set up the wireless signal at my parent's house! I am capable. And yet I am still creating this post on my 8 year old Dell. (His name is Aragorn.) FRUSTRATING!! I simply do not have TechnoJOY (as my dear Eddie Izzard would say). I had to step away from the whole thing before poor Opal learned to fly. (And don't get me started on what I would like to do to the AirPort Express!)

AARRRGGHHHH!!!

What are you using to connect to the internet presently?
Is it a cable box or a DSL box?
Is it wireless?

The Airport Express box looks like it will replace all the wireless functionality of whatever box you are using at present.

The Apple site says to connect an ethernet connection from your cable or DSL box to the Airport Express and then run Airport Utility on Opal.
Have you done this?
If your existing box is wireless it might be wise to disable it's wireless capability before powering on either the Airport Express or Opal. Does Opal have an RJ45 socket? Can you plug a cable from your existing box into that to see if it finds an IP address and connects to the net?

No doubt clear as mud...

A man without pants but WITH answers!! :) I currently have DSL with an ethernet cable. Aragorn is not equipped for wireless... he's old.

I tried following the directions- installed Express on Opal, plugged the ethernet cable in to it and plugged it into the wall. Nothing! Opal picks up the signal and the AE itself lights the green light but still nothing!

I do not know what an R2D2 socket is. I think I need C3PO for that! I am such a geek in all the wrong ways for this!

The RJ45 socket is the type of socket that the ethernet cable plugs into on Airport Express. Exactly the same as the one you must be using with Aragorn just now. If Opal has one of those sockets, you can plug the cable directly into it, and eliminate the wireless part of the setup, just to see if Opal can connect that way.

You say the AE green light is solid green, that is good, and that Opal picks up the signal, so what error message is being given when you try to use the Internet browser on Opal?

The Airport utility should give some status information when it finds the AE box, such as the AE name, IP address and software version. Is this info available?
The solid green light would suggest the AE box is talking to the DSL box okay, and they have exchanged info.

Do you know of the setup on your DSL box? Is the DSL box yours or the property of your ISP? Did your ISP provider set up the box for Aragorn?

Sometimes the ISP only allows one connection, and likes to charge for extra. They do this by only allowing one MAC address to connect.
Does this sound likely?

The Airport Utility should provide us with all the info on connection status. Does it 'sound' happy?

You are horribly wise, Sir! I think that the AE and Opal are talking but they just aren't hearing each other! Perhaps in a very AEs are from Mars, Opal is from Venus kind of way?

(I wonder if my divorce lawyer could help foster communication here, either?)

I think the problem (unlike with my mirage) is this 3rd party ISP you mention. I bet the cable company has some sort of limit on my ethernet cable! Rat bastards!

Opal picked up a wireless signal lickety split in Nannyland so I know she is willing to work at it! When I turn it on here and click the AE icon on Opal, it says its working and the light is green on the AE but somehow, the message does not compute! (It says "I am not connected" or some such nonsense!) I will try plugging the ethernet in directly in the morning!

It is safer for all of us if we have some time apart right now! :)

THANK YOU!!!!

Morning has broken, and such a sweet morning it is!
I hope you slept soundly & had a good night.

Does your DSl box have 4 sockets or only 1?

If only 1, it may be that it's set up for Aragorn only. If it has 4, then that is unlikely. If it is set up for Aragorn only, then that can be overcome by spoofing Aragorn's MAC address, that is, assigning Aragorn's MAC address to the AE box. The DSL box will then think the AE box is Aragorn and talk to it nicely.

But this may not be the problem. We will find out when you connect Opal directly to the DSL box. If that works, then the DSL box is issuing IP addresses okay and allowing connection.
You mention that Opal has connected before. Usually every time that a connection is established, a profile is created for and assigned to, that connection, so that you can select a particular profile when you visit a particular place, and all the settings are appropriate for that location. Please ensure you have chosen to create a new profile for home, and are not trying to connect using a profile created for Nannyland. If you have documentation for your DSL box, that may offer further information.

Time for coffee....

AARRGGGHHHHH!!!!!

(OR now I can't get Opal to pick up the Nannyland signal because the failed AE is in the way!!!!)

I am going to go rock in the corner now until I feel better!

(OR my 12 year old is playing with Rock Band and at least he can make something work so now I need a drink!)

i do hope we solved this problem (i have the same hard and software and a smaller attention span)
